Origin The fresh rhizome of the grass Phragmites communis Trin.
Function and treatment Clearing heat and fire, generating body fluid to quench thirst, relieving irritation, stopping vomiting and diuresis. Used for fever and thirst, cough with lung fever, pus from lung carbuncle, vomiting with stomach fever and astringent pain from fever.
Origin and best harvesting period Reeds are widely distributed in China, including the Liaohe Delta, the Songneng Plain and the Sanjiang Plain in northeast China, the Hulunbeier and Xilinguole grasslands in Inner Mongolia, the Bosten Lake, the Ili Valley and the Emin Valley in Xinjiang, and the Baiyangdian Plain in north China, where large areas of reeds are concentrated. The reeds are best harvested in winter.
