Origin The dried ripe fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bge. var. major N.E.Br. or Hawthorn Crataegus pinnatifida Bge. of the hawthorn family Rosaceae.
Function and treatment Eliminating food and strengthening the stomach; promoting the flow of Qi and dispersing blood stasis. Used for stagnation of meat and food, distention and fullness of the stomach, diarrhoea and dysentery, abdominal pain, stasis of blood and menstruation, postpartum stasis, stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, hernia pain; hyperlipidemia. Coke Hawthorn has enhanced effect on eliminating food and inducing stagnation. For stagnation of meat and food, diarrhoea and dysentery.
Origin and best harvesting period Hawthorn is found in the northeast, north China and Jiangsu, and is mainly produced in Shandong, Henan, Hebei and Liaoning. Hawthorn flowers in May-June and frightens in September-October. Hawthorn harvesting is generally later the further east you go, mostly starting in frost, with some even delayed until early November (winter).
