Origin This product is the dried, ripe fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, family Cyperaceae.
Function and treatment Clearing fire and removing irritation, clearing heat and dampness, cooling the blood and detoxifying the toxin; for external use to relieve swelling and pain. Used for feverish heart trouble, damp-heat jaundice, gonorrhea and astringent pain, blood fever and epistaxis, redness and swelling of the eyes, and fire and poisonous sores; externally for sprains and contusions.
Origin and best harvesting period Gardenia jasminoides grows in scrub or thickets in open fields, hills, valleys, mountain slopes and streamsides at altitudes of 10 to 1500m. In our country, its production in Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Guangxi, Hainan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hebei, Shaanxi and Gansu; in Japan, North Korea, Vietnam and Laos, etc. also have a distribution. September to November gardenia fruit ripe red-yellow when harvested, remove the fruit stalk and impurities, steamed to the upper steam or put in boiling water slightly scalded, take out, dry. The roots are harvested in summer and autumn, washed and dried.
