Origin The dried, ripe fruit of Lycium barbarum L., family Solanaceae.
Function and treatment Nourishing the liver and kidney, benefiting the essence and brightening the eyes. Used for deficiency of sperm, soreness of the waist and knees, dizziness and tinnitus, impotence and spermatorrhea, internal heat and thirst, blood deficiency and yellowing, and dimming of the eyes.
Origin and best harvesting period The Lycium barbarum is found in Ningxia, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, southern Gansu and the provinces of Southwest, Central, South and East China. The general harvesting season is in summer and autumn, and varies slightly from region to region depending on climate, temperature differences and sunshine hours. It is often found on mountain slopes, wastelands, hilly areas, saline lands, roadsides and beside villages and houses.
